Words From the Wards

For the Edinburgh International Book Festival's Words From the Wards event—a part of their year-long series of community arts initiatives—I created an illustration inspired by Helen Harradine’s evocative piece, Madder and White, which drew from her memories of the Old Royal Infirmary hospital. The story tells Ray, who, during the cherry blossom season, experiences a life-changing accident that alters his journey to meet Sandra. Weeks after a bus crash shatters his plans, he wakes in the hospital to find the cherry blossoms in full bloom and Sandra by his side.
