Finding Home in Edinburgh (I)
Project type
Graphic Journalism, Illustration
Date
October 2024
Location
Edinburgh
The National Museum of Scotland has always been one of my favorite places to visit in Edinburgh. When I feel homesick and lonely as a Chinese student on a rainy day, I would take a walk in the museum among the various collections in the East Asian display room. The relics in the Chinese collection remind me of home and resonate with my own identity.
In this graphic journalism project, I decided to follow a storyline of myself experiencing different periods of time in the Chinese history through collections from different dynasties. I was transcending time and space in a spiritual journey to experience the tone of each dynasty. My mood was lit up when I walked out of the museum, feeling as if I had just travelled back in time through the cosmos to meet my cultural origins.
During this project, I also did a lot of sketches when observing the relics in the museum, which fed into my illustration style.
